Medical Tourism — The Globetrotting Patient
What is Medical Tourism?
Medical Tourism is the movement of persons across international borders seeking medical, dental, or surgical care. Growing globalization has been one of the main igniters of medical tourism. Increasingly sophisticated technology in developing nations, combined with low air fare, makes international travel for medical attention not only possible but an attractive option.
Why are people traveling, and where are they traveling to?
One of the biggest factors patients consider is potential cost savings on medical procedures. According to the Medical Tourism Association, the cost savings of Medical Tourism can be up to 90%. Other factors include the history of healthcare innovation within the country, state-of-the-art technology, and international accreditation and quality assurance. The key advantage of Medical Tourism is that the care received abroad is the same or better than the person could receive in their home country.
In 2010 there were 383 Joint Commission International Accredited Hospitals (Hospitals Certified for meeting U.S. quality and safety standards), a dramatic increase from 46 hospitals just six years prior. – Patients Beyond Borders.
Because so many Americans are participating in Medical Tourism, the international market is becoming increasingly westernized.
More than 900,000 Americans traveled overseas for a variety of medical treatments in 2016.
How Does Medical Tourism Benefit Destination Countries?
For developing nations, Medical Tourism drives advancement and development, while developed countries gain more attention as possible destinations.
As the healthcare industry becomes more globalized, we can expect every sector to evolve to keep up; Medical Tourism is just one example of this evolution.
