July Is Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month — Let’s Comfort The Children And Those Who Love them!
Many people don’t realize that children can develop arthritis.
However, according to the National Arthritis Research Foundation, 300,000 children in America have arthritis¹. Since July is Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month, let’s be aware that kids get this debilitating disease too. And since knowledge is power, we can use this awareness to offer comfort and help to sufferers and their families.
In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that the most common type of childhood arthritis is juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), also known as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Childhood arthritis can cause permanent physical damage to joints; this damage can make it hard for the child to do everyday things like walking or dressing, and can result in disability.²
What are the symptoms to look for in childhood arthritis? Some of the most common symptoms are: swelling, joint pain, fever, eye inflammation, and difficulty with everyday activities such as playing or dressing. Diagnosis is made through physical examination, X-rays, and lab tests.²
So, even though we may think of arthritis as something only older people suffer from, juvenile arthritis can affect children of all ages and races.
How vital it is, then, that we be aware of those who suffer from this terrible disease and offer our comfort and help to them and to their families.
