I was determined to share my positive approach and not let diabetes stand in the way of enjoying my life. – Paula Deen

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 34.2 million Americans — just over 1 in 10 — have diabetes, and 88 million American adults — 1 in 3 — have prediabetes¹. Since November is American Diabetes Month, awareness of the symptoms, knowing the risk factors, and managing diabetes are important considerations for all of us.

The symptoms of diabetes are varied.

According to the American Diabetes Association, symptoms can range from feeling very hungry or thirsty to extreme fatigue². And symptoms can start anytime between childhood and adulthood.

There are certain risk factors for diabetes. One study by the CDC brought out that smoking, being overweight, and high blood pressure are some of the major risk factors that can put a person in danger of developing diabetes³.

For those that do have diabetes, there are ways to successfully manage the disease. According to the CDC, managing blood sugar is the key to living well with diabetes, and eating well is the key to managing blood sugar•. So as it is for all of us, a healthy diet and exercise are important to good health for a diabetic. And the effects of unmanaged diabetes can be devastating; from kidney disease to eye problems such as diabetic retinopathy.
