Chadwick Boseman was an accomplished playwright and a much-loved actor. He died of colon cancer at the age of 43.

According to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the U.S., and the second leading cause of cancer death. It affects men and women of all racial and ethnic groups and is most often found in people 50 years or older. But distressingly, the incidence in those younger than 50 is on the rise.¹

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a good time to think about this type of cancer screening.

As Mr. Boseman’s case shows, cancer can strike any one of us at any age. And an added complication right now is the pandemic. The U.S. National Library of Medicine notes that fewer adults are undergoing routine preventive healthcare and cancer screening during the COVID-19 pandemic. More than one-third of adults have not received recommended screenings for associated age and risks during the pandemic. Moreover, 43% of patients missed routine preventive appointments because of COVID-19.²

But is it necessary to put off screenings and routine preventive appointments during the pandemic? Maybe not. Medical office COVID protocols have made office visits safer. Also, according to the Mayo Clinic, there is the possibility that some cancer assessments, such as certain colon cancer screenings, could be performed using at-home tests. And it might be possible to have skin cancer screening through a telehealth visit.³

Be sure to speak with your healthcare provider about your cancer screening needs.
