According to preventblindness.org, cataracts are the world’s leading cause of blindness, accounting for about 42 percent of all cases of blindness around the world.¹ As June is Cataract Awareness Month, it’s a good time to be cataract aware and educate ourselves about this eye disease.

Cataracts cloud the clear lens of the eye, blocking or changing the passage of light into the eye. Vision can grow dim and things such as driving can become difficult.

What causes cataracts? From hereditary factors, to old age, to eye injuries, many factors can lead to a person developing cataracts. Not just a disease of older persons, children can either be born with or develop pediatric cataracts. It is vital that pediatric cataracts be treated, as they can cause poor development of the visual pathway between the brain and the eye for a child, leading to vision impairment.¹

Can cataracts be prevented?

According to mayoclinic.org, no studies have proved how to prevent or slow the progression of cataracts.²

But mayoclinic.org offers these practical suggestions that may help:²

  • Schedule regular eye exams that can detect cataracts and other eye diseases at their earliest stages.
  • Manage health problems, such as diabetes, that can cause cataracts.
  • Choose a healthy diet.
  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet light that may contribute to cataracts.

To assist the eye care community with their surgical needs, Graham-Field is proud to offer the new Hausted® ESC2 Ophthalmology Platform — the Next Generation Eye Chair.

Designed to today’s eye surgery needs, as well as future needs, the ESC2, shown at right, offers an innovative single patient platform chair designed for clinicians by clinicians. Cataracts are a serious concern for young and old. However, they are one of the most treatable eye diseases. So, be sure to get regular eye exams, and take care of yourself. As Maya Angelou once wrote,

“I am grateful for being here … for being able to see … for appreciating love.”³

Be grateful each day for your gift of sight!
