An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure – Ben Franklin

July is National Eye Injury Prevention Month

Many of us are spending more time at home these days — did you know that nearly half of all eye injuries occur in the home?¹

In an article on American Academy of Ophthalmology’s (AAO) website, Kierstan Boyd brings out that cleaning supplies such as bleach cause 125,000 eye injuries per year.¹ So, when using these types of products, it is important to read the labels of products you plan to use carefully and never mix products.

With the extra time at home, have you been tempted to tackle those home improvement projects that you’ve been putting off for some time? Use caution and protect your eyes! The previously mentioned article says that nails and screws can launch into eyes and cause injuries.¹ But, as the article continues, the simple act of wearing protective eyewear when doing these tasks can cut injury chances by 90 percent.¹ Therefore, The American Academy of Ophthalmology urges every household to have at least one pair of ANSI-approved protective eyewear.¹

What if an eye injury does happen to you or a member of your family?

According to Mayoclinic.org:

  • Seek medical help right away even if the injury seems minor²
  • Don’t touch or rub the affected eye²
  • Don’t apply ointment or medication to the eye²
  • If the injury is a chemical in the eye, flush out the chemical with plenty of clean water²

This July, our lives and routines are a bit different than usual. But, continue to stay safe. Take care of yourself, take care of your family. And make the most of National Eye Injury Prevention month with safe practices that take care of you and your family’s eyes!
