Lighting The Way For Healthier Communities — August 9-15th is National Health Center Week 2020
What does the word community mean to you?
More than likely, you will think about the place where you live with others. In times of trial, we turn to our community for help and strength to get through the bad times. The Health Centers in our communities shine a light of hope and healing that helps many through the ordeal of illness. And these days, Health Centers are helping their neighbors cope with the effects of the current pandemic, through testing, as well as other means (according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, about 90% of health centers are offering COVID-19 testing¹).
This year, August 9-15th is National Health Center Week, and we here at Graham-Field share in the celebration of these important institutions in our communities.
The theme this year for the week is “Community Health Centers: Lighting the Way for Healthier Communities Today and in the Future”.
For more than 30 years, National Health Center Week has been a celebration that showcases the programs of health centers nationwide. Each day of the celebration is a focus day that highlights a different aspect of the health center program. For instance, Wednesday, August 12th, is Patient Appreciation Day. As healthcenterweek.org² brings out, this is a day to celebrate patients and community board members who keep health centers accountable and abreast of community needs.
The week of celebration ends with a day to celebrate the health of the youngest among us: Saturday, August 15th is Children’s Health Day. According to healthcenterweek.org², more than 8 million children in the United States get their primary health care from a community health care center.
So, when you think of what community means to you, don’t forget to reflect on the benefits of having a health center in the neighborhood that provides so much for so many.
This year healthcenterweek.org² asks us to especially remember those members of the health center families, front line providers, staff, and beloved patients who lost their lives during the (ongoing) COVID-19 pandemic. So mark your calendar for National Health Center Week, and find ways to support and show gratitude for these important institutions in our communities!
