GF Health Products, Inc. (“Graham-Field”) CEO Ken Spett traveled to Cotonou, Benin, Africa to visit the Africa Mercy ship. Graham-Field, a proud sponsor of Mercy Ships, has provided medical equipment to support surgical care aboard the ship.

Created in 1978 by Don Stephens, Mercy Ships is an international charity that delivers free, world-class healthcare to medically-underserved nations worldwide.

On this trip, visitors got to see a glimpse of Benin and how and where the ship operates. The tour included pre and post-op screenings, surgery rooms, local fishing villages, the engine room, and more.

“It was my privilege to serve aboard the world’s largest civilian hospital ship. I was able to participate in life-changing surgeries for those in desperate need, meet with patients, and encounter hundreds of dedicated volunteers who bring hope and healing to Africa’s poor.” -Ken Spett

The Africa Mercy set sail after leaving Tamatave, Madagascar for Cotonou, Benin in August 2016. The Africa Mercy has been in operation since 2007, providing service for thousands of people in Africa. It includes five operating theaters as well as recovery, intensive care, and low dependency wards. In addition to the surgery procedures, Africa Mercy provides dental care, community health education, construction, and agricultural training.

The Africa Mercy has the capacity to hold 7,000 onboard surgical procedures every year.

Graham-Field proudly donated Ophthalmic Surgery Stretchers, used to perform delicate eye surgeries to treat conditions such as cataracts, strabismus and pterygium.

Our Donations and Your Donations Make the Ship Sail

All Mercy Ship staff members pay their own way to help support the Mercy Ships organization. Everyone, from the doctors to the ship’s cleaning crew, not only gives their time but supports themselves for the mission of care with a goal of saving lives around the world.

We hope Graham-Field’s partnership with Mercy Ships will help sustain the organization’s mission for many years to come.
